Description

In present world many existing reinforced concrete structures are inadequate for earthquakes.
During the late decade have indicated that Recent earthquakes which occurred, major damage
occurred was not directly due to actions of earthquakes but due to poor performance of
structures during earthquakes. It is recognized that the most effective method of reducing the
risk of damaging structure is seismic retrofitting. Retrofitting aims at structural strengthening
of a building after or before an earthquake to a predefined performance. The seismic
performance of a retrofitted building is superior to that of the original building. Complete
reconstruction would be a costly affair. The entire redevelopment of building would cost
much higher than the retrofitting cost. Steel jacketing is an effective retrofitting method. Steel
jacketing can be used in both repairing and strengthening of reinforced concrete structures.
